What is a scuba diving internship?

What is an Internship?

An internship is a part-time job during the academic year or the summer months in which a student receives supervised practical training and even certifications in their field. Internships are often very closely related to the student's academic and career goals, and may serve as a precursor to professional employment. Some internships provide very close supervision by a mentor in an apprenticeship-like relationship. Some internships provide the student with a stipend, some do not.

Ok... now the fun part...

Thought about combining a cool hobby and lifestyle with a career? Scuba diving can offer an individual or a couple exactly that! Diving is wonderful - there are no two ways about it. There are many different dive environments to enjoy and live around in diving also. Whether you enjoy wrecks, caves, caverns, or clear blue coral and wreck diving in warmer climes - diving is global. Everywhere there is diving and instruction there are dive masters and instructors. The dive industry is a growth industry and as travel becomes increasingly viable diving is benefiting. Locations are opening up and increasing numbers of divers are certified annually again causing a need for good instructors.

The dive industry is often viewed as a transient profession. Indeed it can be for those that wish to use their qualifications to travel the globe. For those that wish to settle down, the transient populace of the dive industry assists with allowing a relatively constant stream of new vacancies globally. There are many scuba diving positions available for those that are well trained and do accept the responsibility of a diving career also. To gain a dream job in diving and make a career from diving really does not need to be a dream any longer.

To train to PADI DM (Divemaster) or OWSI (Open Water Scuba Instructor) does indeed mean a lot of diving, dive study, skill training, knowledge work groups, exams, running of a dive boat, assisting with instructor certifications, more study, hardy swim tests, lectures, leading dives, equipment maintenance, more diving and a lot more study - Phew! ... but who says that it cannot be exciting, educational AND fun?

Dive internships are for the serious diver that has fallen in love with this lifestyle and wishes to take it's pleasure and share it with other new dive students. Some people view the internship diver as someone that skips training and takes the fast track route to a professional level. Nothing could really be further from the truth. The amount of studying and dive training involved is extremely intensive and hence why it is good to be able to let off a little steam from time to time.

If you are sick of your life... if you are tired of an office job... if you want to REALLY change your way of living... or maybe you just love the cool t-shirts, gadgets, beaches, sunshine and want to have an AMAZING life.... a diving might well be exactly you need.
